On a misty Sunday morning, Cardiff Quins Women met to embark on the journey to Nant Conwy to play in the Quarter Final of the WWRU Cup. Many teams would have postponed the match due to player shortages, however the 12 players which made up the Quins team were not prepared to roll over, and made the four and a half hour journey North.

After a brisk warm up, the game kicked off at a frenetic pace with the ball being run from all areas of the pitch. Ten minutes into the game a Quins line-out set up good ball for the backs and after some quick ruck play and good interpassing Amber Penrith broke through the Nant Conwy defence and handed off the full back to score in the corner. Jilly Holroyd’s subsequent conversion from the touch line bisected the posts to put the Quins into a seven point lead. The line-outs were excellent with Delphine Marzin’s throwing being on target with every throw, and Rachel Taylor taking an impressive 100% of the Quins lineout’s and on many occasions turning over the oppositions ball. It was another solid line-out which gave the platform for the second try; Amber Penrith breaking through, after a nice break involving Sarah Ferrin and Elenor Snowsill, and going in under the posts. Jilly Holroyd hit the mark with her conversion to give the Quins a 14-0 half time lead.

The second half kicked off and some quick passing through the hands of the backs led to a sixty yard dash from Amber Penrith to score under the posts, completing her hat-trick; Jilly Holroyd converting again to give the Quins a 21-0 lead. The second half was played at a much faster pace than the first with breaks from both sides stopped by excellent covering tackles. Caryl Thomas made a few galloping runs up the middle of the pitch, and Becky Davies showed her pace with a run from the half way line stopped five metres out by the Nant Conwy full back. For the last twenty-five minutes of the game the Quins were camped in their own twenty two, with Nant Conwy pressing hard to score, however the Quins defence held strong, some excellent tackles at the side of the scrum from Kaity Mendes and Zoe Prytherch kept Nant Conwy at bay, and some great turn over work from Becky Blakeway and Sophie Bennett meant that the game finished 21-0 to the twelve women of Cardiff Quins.

Special praise should be reserved for Sarah Ferrin who was playing her first game of rugby, Sophie Bennett who didn’t look out of place at prop despite being our regular outside half, and Becky Davies who could barely stand at the end of the game due to knee injuries but managed to play the entire game.

The Quins would also like to thank Nant Conwy for their fantastic hospitality, before, during and after the game.
