Blaenau
Gwent 12 Quins 35
The Quins started their league campaign with a 35-12 victory against
Blaenau Gwent on Sunday (24th September) at Crumlin RFC.
The team went into an early lead with some impressive evasive running by
Hayley Baxter, resulting in a try under the sticks. Another was
added soon after by Jilly Holroyd, only having to carry the ball a metre
over the line after a great solo run by scrum half Becky Davies and the
team went into a 14-0 lead.
Blaenau Gwent came back strongly in the second half dominating the set
piece with fly-half Vicki Jenkins also controlling the game well. This
resulted in Blaenau scoring two well deserved tries by Stephanie
Turnbull and Mandy Tyler with Anna Mills converting the second.
With the game getting tenser and Blaenau Gwent looking threatening,
Hayley Baxter turned the game again with an interception try. This
was then followed by two slick tries from backs ball finished superbly
by Bianca Modeste, showing some fantastic pace on the wing.
The game was only tarnished by Hayley Baxter, who broke her collar bone
with 5 minutes left in the game. We wish her all a speedy recovery.
League debuts were made for the Quins by Bianca Modeste, Becky Blakeway,
Charlotte Peagam and Caroline Jones.
Thanks go to the four Tredegar Ironside players who were a great asset
to the Quins on the day.
