Sunday
14/09/08 saw the WRU Women's season kick off with a National 10's
competition held at Llandovery RFC.
Cardiff
Quins entered two teams into this tournament, a senior women's side and
a Girls U15 side.
The
Senior women, fielding a team ranging in experience from seasoned
internationals to girls gaining their 1st ever experience of
playing rugby, were largely untroubled throughout the day. They defeated
UWN Newport 61-0, Blackwood 90-0, Neath 31-5 & Waunarlwydd 60-0
before a final physical encounter saw them beat Pontyclun 33-0, to
remain undefeated and win the tournament.
Tryscorers
on the day were Hayley Baxter 11, Non Evans 7, Caryl James 5, Catrin
Edwards 4, Kerry Jenkins 3, Becky Newton 3, Rachel Taylor 2, Natalie
Stone 2, Cat Nicholas, Amber Penrith. Conversions were added by Elinor
Snowsill (14), Non Evans (9), Caryl James (5) Kerry Jenkins and Rachel
Taylor.
Special
mention goes to Izzy Nash, Sarah Barrett and Gema Hughes for their
performances throughout the day in their first ever games of rugby. -
Not a bad way to start- Welsh 10's champions.
Also
appearing at the tournament was our Quins U15 girls side.
They
started the day with a close encounter v Neath Athletic eventually
winning 28-24 with the decisive try coming in the final minute.
This was followed by wins against Newport 26-0 and Colwyn Bay 41-7 with
the girls displaying a high standard of rugby in both these games. The
final game of the day was against a combined Cardigan/Furnace side.
Despite conceding 2 early tries the Quins girls regrouped and showed
great teamwork and commitment to produce a comeback performance and
ran out winners 27-17 to emulate the senior team, remain undefeated and
win the trophy.
Pointscorers
throughout the day were Amberley Ruck (6T, 7C), Joanne Jones (4T, 6C),
Cerys Ballett (4T), Dela Anderson (3T), Gwen Lynch (2T) and Llinos
Honeybun.
Other
members of the playing squad were Ffion Edmunds, Ashleigh Searle,
Branwen Parry, Rachel Morris, Jodie Powling, Jo Bevan, Becky Williams,
Katie Quinn, Cerys Lane.
Our
best wishes for a swift recovery also go out to Jodie Powling who
dislocated a shoulder and broke a wrist during the tournament.
