3rd November - CHSOB Youth v Rhiwbina, (Home)
Over all a match which could have gone either way but Rhiwbina were
victors by 12pts to 3pts. Quins
started strongly and had all the possession and territory early on,
resulting in two 5 m lineouts and a succession of rucks on the try line.
Unfortunately the pressure came to an end when the Quins guards at
the ruck were penalised for being in front of the ball!
Midway through the first half some loose kicking brought Rhiwbina's
dangerous runners into play and a converted try was scored. Quins again
applied pressure via a clean break by Ivan Tatchell, stopped at the last
line of defence. Just prior to half time Rhys Morgan slotted over an
angled penalty to make it 7-3 at the break. The
game was still evenly poised when again after some loose Quins play a
strong run to the corner resulted in a Rhiwbina try, 12-3. With
enough time left Quins pushed forward and were unluky not to score when
Lewis Haines was tackled into touch on the try line. Rhiwbina, were now
down to 14 men due to injury, but Quins momentum was hampered by some
indifferent refereeing at the scrum and breakdown. With time running out
Quins finished the game camped on the visitors line, but credit to
Rhiwbina their defence held firm. Much
improved performances at scrum half by Rwdy and James, great impact
display by Tomos Harries from the bench and two try saving tackles by
Rhys Morgan. Despite only two substitutes available, the team were
competitive and everyone can be proud of their performance against good
opposition.
Saturday
27th October - Youth League v Llandaff North (Home)
This
was effectively the first league game of the season following the
abandonment of the game aginst Barry, and it was encouraging to have a
full complement of players available to the squad.
The
game was played in very wet conditions, making attractive open rugby
difficult at times. In the circumstances both teams produced an
entertaining and competitive game of rugby, the Quins team adapting
particularly well to the conditions, combining some forceful straight
running by the threequarters with some very impressive forward drives.
Midway through the first half , the first try was scored by Nick Atkins
following some fluent movement in the backs, quickly followed by another
from Lewis Haynes, converted by Rhys Morgan. At 12-0, the team looked
reasonably comfortable and for the remainder of the half the forwards
took complete control, at times driving the ball twenty or thirty
metres. One series of drives lead to a succession of penalties in the
opposition twenty two, eventually leading to an unconverted try by
Geraint Williams to make the score 17-0 at half time.
The
second half began with the Llandaff North team putting in a spirited
affort and within a few minutes of the restart a converted try pegged
the score back to 17-7. There followed about fifteen minutes of
determined defence by the Quins, as the opposition threatened to force
their way back into the game. Having held out, the team regained their
composure and secured better field position for the final fifteen
minutes, adding one further penalty before the final whistle, to make
the final score 20-7.
The
turn out and overall performance were very encouraging and provide a
strong base on which to move forward for the remainder of the season.
Wednesday 26 Sept - Youth Cup match versus Glam Wanderers A very young and inexperienced Quins Youth side took on Glamorgan
Wanderers - a team from 3 leagues above them - in the WRU Youth Cup at the Diamond
Ground on Wednesday. Despite the Wanderers fielding a powerful side
with several District players the game was very open and not quite as one sided
as the scoreline suggests. The Wanderers scored 3 tries in each half butthe plucky Quins side never gave up and came agonisingly close to scoring on
several occasions. In the end the pace, power and class of the
Wanderers proved too much but the young Quins side were certainly not disgraced by the
40-0 final score.
Saturday 29 September - Youth League away to Barry The Quins team suffered several late withdrawals and a number of key
players were also absent when they travelled to Barry for the first League game of
the season. Play was dominated by a fierce wind blowing directly down
the pitch with Barry having its benefit in the first half. The Quins sidecomprising only 6 backs did very well to restrict Barry to just 15 points in
the first half, and turned round with some confidence. The second half got under way and soon Quins were rewarded for their effortswith a try by Huw Holland converted by Gwion Jones. Unfortunately
Barry also managed a unconverted try so the score was very finely balanced at 20-7 when
a Barry player suffered a serious and entirely accidental injury. It
was quickly apparent that an ambulance was required and that the player could
not be moved so with approximately 15 minutes left to play the referee
abandoned the match. As the scores were so close and there was so much time left we have askedthat the match be replayed later in the season.
